Lay the Foundation for Success
Lay the Foundation for Success
The transition from primary to secondary school may be daunting for many. As subjects become more content-intensive and concepts become more abstract, our Secondary 1 programmes use structured, skill-based lessons to ensure a smooth transition for your child, reinforcing their fundamental skills and developing their higher-order thinking.
English
Lesson Duration: 2 hrs

Language Mastery
Students will learn about new requirements for the same exam components in primary school: Essay Writing, Situational Writing, Comprehension, Editing and Orals. For example, they will encounter new text types and question requirements such as summary writing and literary analysis of unseen poetry and prose. Our curriculum will also introduce broad topics that cover current affairs and general knowledge, such as Education and the Environment, Global Issues and Social Trends, and Arts and the Humanities, to help students gain a global perspective and improve their competence in tackling comprehension, summary and critical thinking passages.
Skills and Techniques
Through our weekly lessons, students will:
- learn to express their opinions in an organised and fluent manner to improve their writing and oral presentation;
- identify question types and understand their specific requirements, enhancing their reading comprehension skills;
- develop summary skills when they practise sourcing key information within a text and summarising the content coherently; and
- improve their time management through practice tests.
Mathematics
Lesson Duration: 2 hrs
Class Size: 13 students

Content Mastery
Students will learn to classify numbers based on number properties, finding the highest common factor and lowest common multiple of numbers using prime factorisation. They will also explore the concept of variables and discover how they can be represented in algebraic and graphical forms. Through questions based on real-world contexts, such as calculating household finances, delivery charges and water consumption, students will pick up financial terminologies like interests and instalments and better understand the practical application of maths concepts.
Skills and Techniques
Students will learn to use algebra to convey mathematical ideas, eventually mastering the application of algebraic equations to a variety of problems and solving them systematically and logically. They will also hone their presentation and organisational skills as it is key to demonstrating clear and accurate thought processes as part of the solution.
Science
Lesson Duration: 2 hrs

Hear What They Say About TLL
Because the difference we make is why we do what we do.
Lee Wan Yii
"I personally tend to be rather picky about commitments. If I attend any classes outside of school, I believe that they must supplement me with something beyond what my school has thus far made available; otherwise I would simply use the school’s resources. With this strict mind-set, The Learning Lab has proven to be more than worth the time I spent there; not only do I feel that it has given me exposure, knowledge and skills beyond the common classroom, I also feel grateful for the numerous opportunities presented and the friends made.
I find that TLL is more than a place that I just went to for tuition classes. It has been a source of enrichment, inspiration and, indeed, learning, and though my time there has ended, my journey with learning still has a long way to go. That may be one of my greatest takeaways from my experience with TLL."

"My journey at The Learning Lab through these 9 years has been particularly phenomenal - it has inspired and guided me in preparing solidly for the future. To find success in what you're striving towards, first find joy in it. To me, The Learning Lab's approach to education can be surmised as an irresistible combination of enriching material and passionate teachers. They were inspiring and knowledgeable, delivering a quality of education that I simply could not find elsewhere.
Till this date, I still remember my visceral disappointment when I realized I would miss a Math lesson due to a family holiday, as my teacher had promised to apply geometry and spatial concepts to show us the unimaginable - how to create a hole on a piece of A4 paper large enough for us to walk through.
It is hence this compelling combination that first showed me that learning could be fun, and filled me with palpable excitement whenever I learnt something new that stretched me beyond my peers. Whether it was the intensive exam preparations or the thorough content lectures, it has supported my academic growth and allowed me to achieve my personal bests."

"A determined and kind teacher who never gave up on her students, Ms Shu truly inspired me and all my classmates to work harder and never give up. Without any expectation of recognition, Ms Shu has been our light when we were shrouded in darkness.
I can confidently say that Ms Shu is definitely the best teacher that I have ever met, and I believe that most of my success can be credited to her and TLL.
Once again, I would like to express my gratitude to TLL and my teachers for never giving up on me. Without them, I would never dare to dream of where I am today, and I would never have achieved the results I have today."
