What is TLL Curriculum and Teaching about?
The Learning Lab’s Teaching and Learning Model (TLM) is a philosophy that embodies what we want for each TLL student. It contains the core beliefs that drive us to create an enriching and happy student experience for your child.
Some key elements of our TLM include helping students:
- develop the key knowledge, skills and dispositions for happy and effective learning
- achieve performance excellence (training for exams and tests)
- achieve learning excellence (develop key skills and habits for effective learning)
- develop a growth mind set in order to continually make positive progress
How does the TLL curriculum fit my child?
The TLL curriculum can fit your child’s needs because it is well-planned according to school needs and interests by level and subject. This means that your child’s academic abilities will be developed systematically.
For each level and subject, our curriculum specialists have planned specific learning outcomes. Our materials are purposefully designed and curated to help your child reach academic and learning milestones that are needed at his or her level.
Is the teaching in TLL in line with MOE schools (i.e. depth of coverage of topics and answers to open-ended questions)?
Our lesson materials are directly relevant to your child’s school needs as we monitor trends in MOE schools, exam papers and national exams (SEAB).
TLL also gathers constant feedback from teachers, students and parents to ensure that our materials cater to our students' needs.
Will the curriculum challenge my child?
In our lessons, we encourage students to continually improve. One of the ways we do this is to help students master concepts or skills and guide them on how to apply this learnt knowledge to a slightly more complex task. This is done incrementally and with guidance from teachers.
We guide students to think deeply about what they have learnt and make improvements with each task they do. This ensures more effective learning as students become aware of their strengths.
How do teachers manage different classroom dynamics?
A teacher may employ one or a few of several methods to assess the needs of the class as a whole throughout different times of the school year (i.e. start of the year, near the exams, post-exams, etc.).
In class, a teacher may modify tasks for students such as the number or complexity of questions. A teacher may also work closely with parents to talk about their child’s homework and additional ad-hoc assignments.
A teacher may sometimes assign students a ‘buddy’ in class to help adjust to the academic rigour. Most importantly, each teacher is passionate, nurturing, supportive and attentive, and constantly monitoring the needs of individual students as well as the needs of the class.
What exactly are heuristics and how are they taught?
Heuristics are a set of problem-solving techniques that help students discover the best and most practical ways to solve mathematical word problems. They develop one’s logical thinking and ability to solve complex mathematical word problems.
For example, in our Early Years classes, our youngest students are exposed to heuristics through tactile and visual learning approaches, such as using tokens and stickers to build on their fundamental understanding.
What are the differences between IP, IB and mainstream (O-Level) classes?
Mainstream classes follow the O-Level syllabus closely and are meant to prepare students for the O-Level examination.
IP classes cater to students who go to schools with an Integrated Programme and who do not take the O-Levels after four years. In general, IP students study for six years leading to either the A-Levels or the International Baccalaureate (depending on the school). Our IP classes have a stronger focus on building higher-order inference and analytical skills.
Our IP classes are catered to students who take the A-Level examination at the end of 6 years and are suitable for students who take the IB exams at the end of 6 years (e.g. SJI, MGS or ACS students, etc.). In general, we do not recommend that students from one stream attend a class meant for another stream due to the differences in curriculum and teaching focus.
Our IB classes exclusively cater to ACS (Independent) students in the IB stream only. This is because the ACS(I) IB curriculum for Years 1–4 is specialised and focuses heavily on literature. Other schools that follow the IB syllabus may not structure their curriculum in the same way.
What are the differences between the mainstream & GEP classes? Why can’t my child attend GEP classes for exposure?
The GEP curriculum covers materials that are only done by students in the GEP programme in schools such as genre studies or complex tense grammar cloze passages.
The requirements and grading for GEP questions are different from the mainstream ones.
Due to the specificity of our tailored GEP curriculum, we highly encourage students to enrol in a class that matches their academic stream. This will ensure that students receive adequate practice on the components tested in their respective exams.
What qualifications do your teachers have?
Our teachers are graduates and come from a variety of disciplines. They are selected with care and for their expertise, passion and belief in giving each child a quality education. Additionally, our teachers are enrolled in a multifaceted training programme that includes modules on pedagogy, content mastery, classroom delivery, relationship management and marking before they enter the classroom.
How often will I get feedback from teachers?
Our teachers communicate regularly with parents regarding their child’s progress. We also have Student Progress Reports, which are communicated to parents via the Parent Portal twice a year. If you have questions, you may request to speak with your child’s teacher(s) via the Parent Portal.
What are your class schedules like?
Our weekday classes typically start from 3pm with the last class ending at 9.30pm while our weekend classes start from 9am and end at 6pm.
Class schedules differ by location and depend on demand and teacher availability.

What is your average class size?
For Early Years: On average, 8 students per class.
For Lower Primary classes: On average, 10 students per class.
For Upper Primary classes: On average, 12 students per class.
For Secondary and Junior College: On average, 13 students per class.
What is your public holiday policy?
If your child’s class is affected by two public holidays in a term, we will offer a rescheduled class for one of the affected classes. If his or her class is affected by three public holidays in a term, two classes will be rescheduled. (This is only valid for one specific class; i.e. if your child takes English and Maths and each subject is affected by one public holiday, we will not replace any classes.)
What is your replacement class policy?
We will replace up to a maximum of three classes per term (e.g. if your child misses a class because he is sick, on holiday, busy with school activities, etc.).
What is your enrolment procedure?
Please contact us by submitting a form on our website. Our enrolment team will contact you within three working days to discuss your child’s needs and find a suitable class for your child.

Do you offer trial lessons?
Yes, we do offer a Lesson Experience that allows your child to experience what our classes are like. You can arrange for a lesson in the level and subject of your choice, and find out how we can elevate your child’s learning journey

TLL Online Classes
Starting from Term 1 - 2021, we have also begun offering TLL Online, our newest range of programmes, offered to Primary 3 to Secondary 4. These classes are part of our core programmes offerings and will follow the same curriculum as our regular classes.

What is the average PSLE score of a TLL student?
In line with national viewpoints, we have stopped disclosing PSLE results of our students since 2013. However, we have continued to maintain our tradition of academic excellence, with many of our students ranking at the top end of achievements in the nation, school and class, year after year.

How is TLL different from other tuition centres?
We go beyond preparing each student for tests and exams and also prepare them for life beyond academia.
We have a team of more than 40 dedicated curriculum specialists who plan and write our curriculum with specific learning outcomes for each level and subject according to school needs. They also consistently monitor the latest updates from MOE to ensure that our lesson materials are relevant to the current syllabus and help your child reach academic and learning milestones needed at his or her level.
Our lesson materials are refreshed weekly and incorporate general knowledge, real-world events, and trends in technology and science to keep each student captivated whilst broadening his or her knowledge acquisition for exam needs and beyond.
