Mathematics is often viewed as a daunting subject, and it can be challenging to make maths exciting for children. However, we can change how our children perceive numbers and problem-solving with maths puzzles and games.
Besides making maths less daunting, maths puzzles and games can be highly beneficial as they help children to develop essential mathematical and cognitive skills in a fun and engaging way.
Here are some types of the maths puzzles and games that we do in our TLL maths lessons to make learning mathematical concepts fun as well as to develop important maths skills.
Number puzzles are mathematical and logical games that require using numbers and deductive reasoning to arrive at a specific solution or outcome. These games encourage children to think critically and develop effective problem-solving strategies. Some examples of number puzzles and games include Sudoku, maths crossword puzzles and number sequences.
At The Learning Lab, we introduce number puzzles and games in lessons to help students reinforce numerical concepts in a fun way.
To reinforce the conversion of fractions and decimals, Sudoku-related puzzles such as the one above can be introduced for students. Here, they can practice problem-solving and apply logical thinking skills beyond the typical exam scenarios.

Consisting of brain-teasers and challenges, logic puzzles involve a scenario or a set of conditions that need to be analysed to arrive at a logical solution. They come in various forms, such as maths riddles and cryptic puzzles. Introducing logic puzzles offers several notable advantages for children, such as enhancing logical reasoning and boosting memory and concentration.
At The Learning Lab, we incorporate logic puzzles and riddles on worksheet covers to provide engaging and enjoyable introductions to new topics.
For instance, our Primary 5 maths students are introduced to the famous riddle ‘The Mystery of the Missing Dollar’ before learning the word problem concept of Excess & Shortage.
This maths riddle prompts students to use creative thinking to reach a logical solution, illustrating how maths is applied in real-life situations. Such riddles nurture children’s curiosity and increase their motivation.
Geometric puzzles are challenges or games that involve geometric shapes, spatial relationships, and geometric concepts. These puzzles typically require the ability to manipulate, arrange, or analyse geometric elements to solve a problem. They can take the form of tangrams, mazes, and patterns.
At The Learning Lab, we understand the importance of nurturing children's spatial awareness and pattern recognition as these are essential mathematical skills that extend beyond the scope of traditional textbook learning.
During a Geometry lesson, our Primary 3 maths students get to try their hands at Colour Town. Designed by TLL, the game includes 30 puzzles that require students to arrange coloured cubes into 3D solid figures from selected points of view. Such puzzles or games prepare students for more complex geometric problems in upper primary topics such as Geometry and Volume.
At The Learning Lab, we strive to make Mathematics fun, accessible, and engaging at every level while getting your child exam-ready.
We go beyond the textbook to ignite students’ enthusiasm for learning by incorporating engaging games, puzzles, and interactive activities that bring the world of maths to life — making learning not only educational but also incredibly enjoyable. This approach enhances the retention of concepts and fosters stronger connections, resulting in improved overall performance.
Besides breaking down the complexities of problem sums students might face in the exams, we also expose students to the various methods of solving different problems, utilising different heuristics and out-of-the-box thinking to derive at the answers.
