To your child who has just learnt what it’s like to prepare for and conquer a major exam, congratulations on successfully completing the PSLE! And for you, as a parent, it’s finally time for a breather.
As you and your child enjoy this short break in October, it is also important to take small steps towards preparing him or her for secondary school.
We understand the difficult position you are in — you want to let your child take a break after the PSLE, but you don’t want them to fall behind or become complacent during this year-end holiday either.
At The Learning Lab, we strongly believe that the answer lies in striking a delicate balance between work and play.
The post-PSLE holiday is actually the best time for your child to continue learning at his or her own pace.
Keeping him or her mentally engaged during this long holiday will make for an easier transition into secondary school, where the curriculum is significantly more challenging.
This mental stimulation does not necessarily have to come in the form of assessment books or written exercises. You can bring your child out on the weekends to try new activities together as a family.
Your child definitely deserves some time away from the books, but it’s important for you to keep in mind that the jump from primary to secondary school can be quite stressful, especially if your child spends the entire holidays away from academic practice.
So how can you help your child maintain the level of mental engagement he or she needs to avoid these facing problems?
Our Secondary One Head Start programme introduces your child to the basic concepts and theories taught in Secondary One, giving him or her the confidence for a strong start in secondary school.

While we have identified academic excellence as one of our top priorities as an enrichment centre, we recognise that merely focusing on academia will not provide your child with the skills he or she needs to succeed as a person, not just as a student.
Will knowing that the total length of capillaries in an adult is 4,200km help your child fare better in his or her primary school tests? Not exactly. Is the concept of Leap Days going to be tested in national examinations? Probably not. So why do we insist on our core belief that nurturing a love for learning helps to facilitate academic excellence?
Because the real magic happens in that moment of deep learning when a child realises that learning is not confined to books.
