Here's Why Primary 5 Is A Crucial Year For Your Child

If your child is in Primary 5 this year, the PSLE countdown has begun.

As your child inches closer to his or her first major school examination, it is vital that your child is adequately prepared to meet the demands of the upper primary syllabus.

Here are some reasons why Primary 5 is a crucial year for your child:

Coping With A More Intense Workload

The jump in workload and difficulty of schoolwork is usually felt most at this level – cloze passages get trickier, Math problem sums become more complicated, and there is more than one concept weaved into one Science question.

On top of your child’s current school work, he or she will also need to manage his or her revision to ensure that concepts taught in previous years are not forgotten. With more work piled on your child’s plate, as a parent, you will be playing a bigger role this year in helping your child manage his or her workload.

At The Learning Lab, our Primary 5 curriculum builds on the foundation laid in your child’s lower primary years to equip him or her with the necessary tools to master new concepts and fundamental techniques for academic excellence.

Solidifying Your Child's Foundation Across All Subjects

At Primary 5, your child is expected to demonstrate higher-order thinking and more refined understanding of previously taught concepts. In other words, a Primary 5 question on a Primary 4 topic will be tougher and requires more analysis to be answered correctly. Therefore, it is important for your child to have strong basic knowledge and application skills in his or her subjects in order to excel during the examinations.

Practise, practise, practise – building a rock solid foundation comes with a lot of discipline and hard work.

“[Revision] is all about being strategic. Once you’ve revised the fundamental concepts, test yourself by linking up all the ideas you have learnt. Apply what you’ve learnt by trying different types of questions from past year papers or drafting essay outlines with varied angles.” – Kate Lim, TLL Alumnus.

Managing Stress

Due to the increased workload coupled with ongoing revision, and not forgetting CCA commitments, your child may face more stress than ever at this stage. It is crucial that you monitor your child closely and constantly reassure him or her that you are in this journey together.

If your child is feeling anxious about academics, it is good to review his or her study habits and schedule. Start preparing for the key exams early by drawing up a comprehensive revision timetable to guide your child in his or her revision. Establishing clear and realistic goals from the start will also help manage your child's expectations and give him or her confidence in achieving these goals.

Emotional stress that could stem from not doing well in class quizzes or fatigue from ongoing school commitments can affect your child's mental wellness. Talk to your child regularly and give him or her verbal encouragement and motivation. Ensure your child gets ample rest and adequate sleep (8 hours on school days!) especially if he or she has after-school activities the next day.

optimal quantity of sleep leads to more effective learning in terms of knowledge acquisition and memory consolidation
